Metallica Head to the “Borderline” with Acoustic Thin Lizzy Cover
Back when Metallica held their annual Helping Hands Concert & Auction earlier this month, the band played two distinct sets: an all acoustic set and then a plugged-in set. Last week we got the pro-shot footage of “Lux Æterna,” the first single off their forthcoming album 72 Seasons, and now today we’ve got the pro-shot footage of the band’s Thin Lizzy cover of “Borderline.”
Up until now, you’ve either had to have caught the performance when it ran live on Paramount+, but Metallica released the “MetOnTour Edit” of the song earlier today. Full of acoustic twangy-ness and featuring backing vocals from Avi Vinocur of Goodnight, Texas, this soulful song really drives it home for me that Hetfield needs to put out a solo acoustic album of his own.
For those that don’t know, the song’s about how a relationship’s gone sour. Hetfield, who’s going through a divorce of his own right now, certainly has to feel some connection to the track, as he specifically thanked Phil Lynott for “writing that song about my life.”
We’re only a few months away from the release of 72 Seasons, which will be available on April 14, 2023. Then less than two weeks after that, Metallica will embark on the first leg of a massive, two-year touring schedule, which you can check out below the video.
