Maynard James Keenan Releases Live Album with Disturbing Cover Art
I hope you didn’t want to sleep tonight because, after seeing this picture, you probably won’t. Tool, A Perfect Circle, and Puscifer frontman Maynard James Keenan announced a new live album that’s coming out on March 22 called Cinquanta: A 50th Birthday Celebration For Maynard James Keenan Live, and the album’s cover art is simply an assault on your eyes. Featured on the cover for the new live album is Keenan himself dressed up as a baby with a diaper on crying in a crib. Even if you have a diaper fetish, you probably won’t anymore after seeing this image.
The live album was recorded at Keenan’s 50th birthday shows at the Greek Theater in Los Angeles about a decade ago. All three of Keenan’s bands played at the birthday gig, plus space rock band Failure. Keenan performed a number of songs with Failure as a guest vocalist, meaning that Keenan was featured in every set those nights. The only way to cram even more of Maynard James Keenan into the experience is to drink one of his wines while listening to the album. Maybe that would make the album cover less unsettling.
Keenan is planning a similar celebration for his 60th birthday this year, playing a tour in April through early May called “Sessanta: A 60th Birthday Celebration for Maynard James Keenan,” with both A Perfect Circle and Puscifer, plus special guests Primus. The tour promises to have all three bands on stage at the same time, somehow. Primus frontman Les Claypool has this to say about the tour in a quote reported on by Brooklyn Vegan:
“What a glorious notion of combining three bands that all start with the letter ‘P’ for a tribute to Maynard Keenan’s 60th trip around the sun. I’ve known Maynard for more than three decades and I have to say, I’ve yet to meet a more creative, ambitious and industrious human being; that is assuming he is actually human. Often his perspective and output are more ‘extraterrestrial’ than that of this planet so, It wouldn’t surprise me if he has some sort ‘Prometheus’ type DNA deep in his marrow.”
