METAL SUCKFEST BANDS TELL YOU WHY METAL FUCKIN’ SUCKS

Wednesday, November 23rd, 2011 at 10:30am by

So, hey, I dunno if you guys heard, but earlier this month we put on this totally rad festival, The Metal Suckfest? No big deal, it was just twenty awesome bands in two days, whatever.

So ANYWAY, our brahs over at Metal Injection were there to film another edition of their awesome “Ask the Artist” series, in which they — duhskis! – ask a variety of artists one particular question… in this case, “What sucks about metal?” Check out the answers from the bands that played The Metal Suckfest — plus a couple of incredibly handsome non-musicians (cough, Vince and I, cough, cough) below:

THE INAUGURAL METAL SUCKFEST: LINEUP REVEALED!

Tuesday, September 6th, 2011 at 5:00pm by

Click to enlarge the ridiculously sweet poster art by Rodney Githens from Vertebrae 33 and Metal Band Art

When we first announced The Metal Suckfest, we promised you that it was NOT just a bunch of tours already-in-progress, routed so that they all converge for one event. That it was NOT just bands that all sound alike and one would normally expect to find on the same bill. That it would be a wholly unique concert in which some truly incredible artists are coming together JUST to play THIS ONE SINGLE EVENT.

And now you know — we weren’t lying.

We are SO PROUD to announce the line-up for the inaugural Metal Suckfest, which will take place November 4 and November 5 at The Gramercy Theatre in Manhattan. As you can see, the bands range from thrash to death to grind to prog to noise rock to NWOAHM to stoner to we don’t even know what you call it, but they all have one thing in common — they are all fucking awesome, and they are all 110% MetalSucks approved. This fest is gonna be so great, we keep having to pinch ourselves to make sure it’s real.

Tickets go on sale Friday at LiveNation.com at 10 am. 12 noon. We’ll be announcing the final four bands on the bill shortly, but trust us — you don’t wanna wait to get your ticket.

Here’s the rest of the line-up:

FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 4
Municipal Waste
God Forbid
Today is the Day
This is Hell
Howl
Black Tusk
Magrudergrind
All Pigs Must Die
Ramming Speed
Prime Evil

SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 5
Cynic
Obscura
The Red Chord
3
A Life Once Lost
Scale the Summit
Last Chance to Reason
Fight Amp
Rosetta
Ultrageist

TEN OUT OF TEN METAL MUSICIANS AGREE: BEING IN A METAL BAND IS NOT A GOOD WAY TO GET LAID

Friday, July 15th, 2011 at 1:30pm by

This has to be the best-yet edition of “Ask the Artist,” the new video series in which our partners in crime at Metal Injection ask musicians to answer one uniform question. This week, the question is “How easy is it to score girls while on the road?” And, confirming what Sergeant D. has been telling us all along, the answer seems to be, “Not very easy at all.” Check it out:

WANNA KNOW WHAT BAND GOT YOUR FAVORITE MUSICIAN INTO METAL?

Wednesday, June 22nd, 2011 at 4:30pm by

As we mentioned a few weeks ago, Metal Injection has launched this great new video series, “Ask the Artist,” in which they give you helpful tips for getting out tough stains. No, I’m kidding, they ask fucking artists things, that’s why it’s called “Ask the Artist.”

ANYWAY, the latest installment of the series has the MI dudes posing the question “What band got you into metal?” to current and former members of Dying Fetus, Killswitch Engage, Job for a Cowboy, Cephalic Carnage, Revocation, The Ocean, Lazarus A.D., and more.

My personal favorite answer probably comes from A Life Once Lost’s Doug Sabolick, not because I have any special affinity for the album he cites, but because a) it’s a pretty unique answer and b) I remember exactly where I was the first time I heard that album, and I like thinking that while I was rocking out to it with Vince in my parents’ living room, Sabolick was somewhere having his mind blown and his life forever changed. I like that we have that connection now. We’re like Fievel and Tanya from An American Tail, singing “Somewhere Out There.” Only not really at all.

Check out the rest of Metal Injection’s “Ask the Artist” series here. And, hey, while we’re on the topic, feel free to discuss the bands and albums that got you into metal in our comments section below.

MOST FASCINATING THING EVER OF THE WEEK: WHAT METAL MUSICIANS WOULD DO IF THEY WEREN’T METAL MUSICIANS

Thursday, June 9th, 2011 at 12:00pm by

The days when a musician stands a chance of making a living as a musician may very well be coming to a close. It’s one thing for the members of Crowbar Abortion to have to get jobs at the mall when they’re not on tour, but when even the dude from Guns N’ Roses is giving guitar lessons on his down time, you know times are tough.

Which gives a little extra edge to the below video, in which our doppelgängers at Metal Injection ask various musicians what they’d do with their lives if they weren’t in a band. Because that’s a question most metal musicians should probably ask themselves at some point or another.

Best answer comes from Revocation drummer Phil Dubois-Coyne, although I’m down the response A Life Once Lost’s Doug Sabolick and Bob Meadows provide, too.

Click Here To Watch The Video

This video is the first in a new series Metal Injection is doing, called, cleverly enough, “Ask the Artist.” Go here to make sure you stay up-to-date on all future installments, as I’d wager that they will continue to be this entertaining.

BAND MEMBER COMINGS AND GOINGS: MELECHESH LOSE A MEMBER, A LIFE ONCE LOST GAIN A MEMBER

Thursday, April 28th, 2011 at 1:30pm by

“We’re captive on the carousel of time.” Jonathan Davis said that, and I believe it. The seasons, they go ’round and ’round, like Ratt, and people change, things change, and so sometimes bands we like have shifts in their line-up. For example:

  • Melechesh have split ways with their bass player, Rahm Emanuel, who apparently wants to run for Mayor of Chicago. But I’m operating under the impression that guitarist/vocalist Ashmedi is the driving creative force behind this band, so I suspect that this will have roughly as much of an effect on the quality of their music as someone sneezing in Jakarta might.
  • A Life Once Lost has hired Jordan Crouse to replace their recently departed (as in he left the band — he’s not dead) drummer, Justin Graves. In an interview with Metal Insider, ALOL guitarist Doug Sabolick says, “It’s good because with Justin, with the gap between where we live, it was hard to rehearse as much as we wanted to. Now with Jordan, we all live in the same town and we can practice as much as we want to.” So that’s an enthuastic endorsement.

YOU’LL PROBABLY WANT TO PAY ATTENTION TO INTENSUS

Tuesday, March 15th, 2011 at 12:00pm by

Metal Blade’s latest sign is a band called Intensus, and by “band” I mean “one man project” — the man being  Eli Litwin, drummer of Knife the Glitter, Burden, Normal Love, and some other bands with whom I’m not really familiar (although I know that Gary Suarez is a KTG fan). The only piece of Intensus music I’ve been able to locate thus far is the above track, “Time Killer Shitter,” which features vocals by Jesse Korman from The Number Twelve Looks Like You — and it doesn’t really do that much for me. I mean, it’s fine, but if not for the pedigree, I don’t know that I’d ever have given it a second listen. (There are some other tracks that are allegedly available on Intensus’ MySpace page, but I can’t get the player to work!)

But I still think this album is, at the very least, going to be worth your attention, for the following reasons: a) Litwin has recruited some awesome guest vocalists, including Between the Buried and Me’s Tommy Rogers, A Life Once Lost’s Robbert Meadows, and East of the Wall’s Chris Alfano, to appear on the album, and b) even though process shouldn’t really be considered when evaluating a piece of art, the process for the creation of this particular record, as explained in the press release announcing the signing, sounds pretty cool:

AN AWESOME 2011 TOUR WE’VE YET TO COMMENT ON: ATHEIST + ALOL + REVOCATION + LAST CHANCE TO REASON

Thursday, February 3rd, 2011 at 12:08am by

“We aim to please, so please aim.” So read the sign above the urinals at the long-shuttered NYC restaurant institution Ed Debevic’s. And while we certainly don’t have a need to ask you to aim your urine, kindly stop emailing us about sweet tours just because we haven”t publicly commented on them yet. We know! We’re just, like, ya know… busy and stuff.

But there’s a pretty sweet tour storming the U.S. this Spring that you’ll definitely want to know about if you haven’t already heard. Atheist, whose new album Jupiter delighted old-school prog metalheads at the end of last year, are embarking on a brief 7-day North American jaunt. Atheist will have the incredible support cast of A Life Once Lost, Revocation and Last Chance to Reason in tow — definitely a prog tour for the books, but with only 7 dates we wish it were longer.

Dates after the jump.

LINE-UP FOR NEW ENGLAND METAL & HARDCORE FESTIVAL ANNOUNCED

Wednesday, February 2nd, 2011 at 10:30am by

Well, the line-up for this year’s New England Metal & Hardcore Festival — one of the oldest and most revered extreme music fests in the U.S. — has been announced, and it’s… interesting. The fest returns to a three-day format after being only two days last year, but if I’m not mistaken, this is the first time that the initial day will be a Thursday, not a Friday. And as reader Brian Kessler pointed out to us via e-mail, there are two noteworthy aspects to the lineup:

  • It seems like metal and hardcore have been further segregated on the bill — Thursday appears to be almost entirely dedicated to deathcore and crabcore bands, Friday seems to be entirely devoted to hardcore bands, and Saturday is dominated by metal bands. There are pros and cons to this approach — the pro being that if you’re only a fan of one particular style of extreme music, you can cherry pick which day you’re going to attend, and the con being that new fans are less likely to be exposed to bands with whom they were not already familiar.
  • There seem to be fewer “big name” acts. Sure, Hatebreed and Biohazard are on there, but that’s still a far cry from years’ past. In fact, plenty of big name who have new albums scheduled to come out this year — like Amon Amarth, DevilDriver, Arch Enemy, In Flames, and Children of Bodom — aren’t playing the fest.

Please note that I’m not knocking the fest — in fact, I think Saturday, April 16 is full of killer bands — and I don’t think every fest needs to be headlined by a band of Megadeth’s stature. I just think this particular line-up is… interesting.

Anyway, here’s the full bill:

A DRUMMER ONCE LOST

Thursday, January 27th, 2011 at 2:00pm by

Wow, what a bummer. Just yesterday we were talking about how A Life Once Lost just signed a new deal with Season of Mist, and how we’ll be getting a (hopefully excellent) new album from them this year, and sunshines and rainbows and bunnies and butterflies.

And now they’re down a member.

A statement from the band, via Lambgoat:

METAL LABELS SIGN METAL BANDS

Wednesday, January 26th, 2011 at 3:00pm by

Seems like there’s been a spate of significant band signings over the last week in the world of metal. Despite all the industry’s woes, it’s good to know that labels are still investing in bands. But that begs the question… what kind of deals are these bands getting? Do their deals have advances? Do they include merch? Do they include mandatory monthly ass-fuckings? Inquiring minds would like to know.

After the jump let’s take a look at the new label homes of Chimaira, A Life Once Lost, Demolisher, Funeral for a Friend and Mercenary, and how those new relationships might work out.

IS IT DUMB 2B ORIGINAL???

Thursday, January 20th, 2011 at 4:00pm by

I was thinking the other day about how some bands make a lot of money even though they always get bad reviews and it seems like nobody likes them. Like how everybody is all “I H8 DEATHCORE/METALCORE;;;ALL THE BANDS SOUND THE SAME;H8 U SUISIDE SILENCE;;H8 U ATTACK ATTACK,” and then they are like “U SHOULD LISTEN TO THIS BAND BECAUSE THEY ARE DOING SOMETHING REALLY ORIGINAL AND UNIQUE” and link to some obscure band I have never heard of. I guess it is cool to be original if you are OK with being a poor artist, but sometimes I think it’s stupid to be “original.” I think it is smarter to wait until someone else invents something, then after they make it popular, copy them (only do it a little better so you get more popular than the band who invented it).

I am going to list some bands who were stupid, because they were the ones who invented something that other people copied — metalcore, djent, and other popular styles of metal. Most of these bands were really good, but because they were one of the first bands to play that style of metal, nobody liked them and they didn’t make any money. I feel bad for them, but I want to share their stories here so you don’t make the same mistakes they did!!

Job For a Cowboy @ First Unitarian Church 12/17/10

[UPDATE: Now with actual pics included! Sorry. -Ed.]

Earlier this week we shared with you some photos taken by Alyssa Lorenzon at the First Unitarian Church in Philadelphia on December 17th, 2010, and those pics were some of the bad-assiest, hairiest, most metal pics of Skeletonwitch we’ve ever seen. Fellow MS photographer Mariel Pietrykoski was on-hand at the same show and snapped some excellent pics of the other bands on the bill, A Life Once Lost, Job For A Cowboy and Misery Index. A LIFE ONCE BOOTLEGGED

Monday, January 3rd, 2011 at 11:30am by

Someone who claims to have heard the new A Life Once Lost album in some form or another assures me it’s awesome, and vocalist Bob Meadows certainly seems confident in it. And based on the three or four new songs I’ve seen the band perform live twice now (once at the MetalSucks/Metal Injection CMJ Showcase, once while opening for Crowbar), I would wager that neither Mr. Meadows nor Mr. Tipster are lying.

Of course, some of you are bound to disagree — and thanks to the magic of the internet, we don’t have to wait for the actual album to come out to start calling each other names and questioning the mental capacity of anyone who disagrees with us. A fan-filmed video of a new song shot at the Syracuse stop of last month’s Stillborn Fest is online now, so everyone can enjoy his or her (Hi, three girls that read this website!) chance to make a premature judgment.

A Life Once Lost’s new album, which as far as I know still has no title, will be out later this year.

THE BEST METAL ALBUMS OF 2010, AS CHOSEN BY METAL MUSICIANS THEMSELVES — PART VIII

Friday, December 17th, 2010 at 3:00pm by

FEATURING MEMBERS OF DRAGONFORCE, A LIFE ONCE LOST, ALL SHALL PERISH, CANCER BATS, THE ACCUSED, AIRBOURNE, ABSU, WOE, WHILE SHE SLEEPS, DIAMOND PLATE, MALEFICE, MUTANT SUPREMACY, GENGHIS TRON, AND TRENDKILL BOOKING AND RECORDINGS

For 2010, we decided to do something special as part of our regular end-of-year festivities here at MetalSucks — namely, ask musicians from across the vast spectrum of the metalsphere (or, in a few cases, the almost-metalsphere) what their favorite albums of the year were. Death metallers, thrash metallers, black metallers, stoners, grinders, and djenters alike graciously contributed lists to MS, and we’ve be running them in groups of ten to twelve musicians at a time twice a day all week.

After the jump, check out the eighth and final group… we hope you enjoy seeing what some of metal’s heaviest hitters were into this year as much as we have!

(And please note that these are musicians and that they, um, have a lot on their minds. So some of ‘em named albums that actually came out last year. Please don’t freak out.)
