Were You Between the Ages of 14 and 18 in 1998? Then You’ll Probably Like the New Korn Song “Insane”

Korn - The Serenity of SufferingIf you weren’t of a certain age in their heyday, you probably don’t care much for Korn. They aren’t a classic act that crosses generational lines like Maiden or Sabbath, nor are they (or were they ever) youngins that kids and jaded metalheads alike got on board with, such as Carcass or Revocation or even their contemporaries in Slipknot. Simply put, you had to be there. Korn are one of those bands of a specific time and place, and they’ve been riding that wave ever since.

So I suspect that if “Freak on a Leash” and “Got the Life” were on the mixtape you painstakingly dubbed from the radio in 1998 — and if you dug Jonathan Davis’s return to scatting in the band’s summer single “Rotting in Vain” — then you’ll probably also like their newest one “Insane.” It’s scratch some kind of nostalgic itch for you. Even the album’s cover artwork pulls at my inner teenage outcast heartstrings. To be a fair, it’s not a terrible song, it’s just… Korny, ya know?

For the rest of you: carry on about your day. And if you were between the ages of 14 and 18 in 1998 but still never got into Korn, congrats, you have excellent taste! Except if you were jamming 311 albums instead.

The Serenity of Suffering, on October 21, and we were totally serious about going to Halloween parties dressed as Korn fans.
