Satyricon Speak “To Your Brethren in the Dark” on Latest Track

satyricon-deep-calleth-upon-deepHave you deciphered the meaning of the title track from Satyricon’s new album, Deep Calleth Upon Deep, yet?

No? Well lucky for you, the band’s just put out another one from the album with an equally mystifying title: “To Your Brethren in the Dark.” When I put my two-year-old to bed every night I turn out the lights then sit with him for a few minutes, during which time I talk to my brethren in the dark… so maybe it’s about that.

But oh, right, black metal! Satyricon’s latest is a slower counterpoint to the title track’s upbeat attack, but I think I may like it even more: the open, airy drum beat provides plenty of room for the arpeggiated guitar parts to breathe, making for a song that sounds thoroughly, well… dark. The sparing use of horns — unexpected in a black metal track — adds to that feeling.

We’ll have the band’s leader, Satyr, on an upcoming episode of The MetalSucks Podcast. Stream “To Your Brethren in the Dark” below. Deep Calleth Upon Deep the album comes out September 22 on Napalm, and can be pre-ordered here.
