Staind’s Aaron Lewis Compares Limp Bizkit’s Fred Durst to the Dalai Lama

I am 99.9% certain that Aaron Lewis from Staind has no idea who the Dalai Lama is.

The singer/rocket scientist played a show in Virginia Beach, VA last Friday (February 22), during which, The PRP reports that Rock Feed reports, he revealed that Limp Bizkit frontman/filmmaker Fred Durst “spent like a million and a half dollars on that fucking video” for the 2001 Staind track “Epiphany.” The Durst-directed clip stars Billy Zane (The Scorpion King 3: Battle for Redemption).

Even Lewis admitted that this video is “Dumb shit,” leading one fan in the crowd to astutely observe that “Fred’s an asshole.”

That’s when Lewis leapt to Durst’s defense, comparing this generation’s most famous eHarmony commercial director to one of the most revered spiritual leaders in the world:

“No, Fred‘s the whole reason I’m sitting in front of you tonight. And I gotta say that that at this point in my life I call Fred when I need like Dalai Lama advice, for real.”

I feel like the mere admission that Fred Durst is responsible for Aaron Lewis’ entire career automatically disqualifies him from being compared to the Dalai Lama. Or the Pope, for that matter. Maybe you could get away with L. Ron Hubbard. Maybe.

But I get that music is subjective and Aaron Lewis and Fred Durst have fans and those fans have feelings too and blah blah blah, so let’s approach the comparison from a different angle. Let’s play a game. I’ll put six quotes below, and you tell me if it was said by Fred Durst or the current Dalai Lama, Tenzin Gyatso. Ready? Okay, here we go…

  1. “Love and compassion are necessities, not luxuries. Without them, humanity cannot survive.”
  2. “So you can take that cookie and stick it up your yeah!”
  3. “We can never obtain peace in the outer world until we make peace with ourselves.”
  4. “Holdin’ the gold. It’s so gold. It’s so golden, y’all.”
  5. “Our prime purpose in this life is to help others. And if you can’t help them, at least don’t hurt them.”
  6. “Fucked up AIDs from fucked up sex, fake ass titties on a fucked up chest.”

You will probably not be shocked to learn that quotes 1, 3, and 5 are all from the Dalai Lama, while quotes 2, 4, and 6 are all the poetry of Fred Durst.

So, like I said: I do not think Aaron Lewis knows who the Dalai Lama is.

I do think Lewis has perhaps eaten at San Francisco’s The Deli Lama, and maybe spoke to the owner there. I don’t mean to cast dispersions on The Deli Lama himself, but I find it much easier to believe that Durst has something in common with a dude who makes sandwiches.
