Gojira Was a $1,200 Clue on Jeopardy!

There are a few heavy metal bands that your average person can name off the top of their heads, but Gojira might not be on that list. That being said, the folks that make it onto Jeopardy! aren’t your average normie.

On the Jeopardy! episode that ran this past Friday, a contestant named Matthew successfully name dropped Gojira to nail a $1,200 question on the long-running quiz show. As the three contestants were finishing off clearing the board, the final question was part of the “Pop Culture Dragons” category.

The question — or rather the answer if we’re following Jeopardy! rules, was “‘Where Dragons Dwell’ is a swell song from this band that took its name from the Japanese word for ‘Godzilla.’” The dude in third place proved why he was in that position by answering “What is Gorillaz.” Which is… an inspired answer, given the answer’s context clues. A second later, the dude in second place named Matthew somehow buzzed in without laughing in that other guy’s face before correctly answering with an emphatic “What is Gojira?” Nailed it.

The interaction ended up getting highlighted on Gojira’s official Instagram account, where the band also noted that the song has the band’s “longest uninterrupted double bass section in our entire catalogue.” How’s that for some Gojira trivia?

This is far from the first time metal’s made its way onto Jeopardy. Contestants have been tasked with knowing all kinds of shit about metal luminaries, including questions about Morbid Angel, Obituary, Rammstein, Five Finger Death Punch, Rob Zombie, Slayer and Slipknot. And most of the time, the normies on that show got the questions right.

As we speak, Gojira’s got a new album in the works. Recently, in an interview with Colombia’s El Expreso Del Rock, drummer Mario Duplantier said the album is “going to be heavier” than their 2021 release Fortitude. In the meantime, it’s cool to see the guys get mentioned in something as fun as Jeopardy!
