Slipknot Apparently Has a New Drummer

Admittedly, the saga of Jay Weinberg’s departure/removal from Slipknot has been given more attention than the matter truly deserves, but we’re going to give it more attention anyway because we seriously just can’t help ourselves. It’s like a trainwreck that you can’t look away from.

At this point we all know the story, but let’s give it a brief rundown: in November, Slipknot issued a statement announcing they were parting ways with Jay Weinberg, their drummer of 10 years. Weinberg responded with a statement saying he was “heartbroken and blindsided” to hear he had been ousted from the group. His former bandmate from Against Me, Laura Jane Grace, took to Twitter and called the firing “poetic justice” and hilariously called Weinberg “little bitch boy.” Then Weinberg started playing shows with Infectious Grooves and officially became the full-time drummer for Suicidal Tendencies. I’d almost call it a soap opera at this point except that soap operas are less predictable and more entertaining.

Well, it looks like Slipknot officially has a new drummer, although they’re not announcing who it is yet in what is easily the worst-kept secret in heavy metal history. Yesterday the band put up a cryptic Instagram post with just the picture of a broken drumstick and the word “Rehearsal.” If an individual did this, we’d call it attention-seeking behavior, but when a band does it it’s called “marketing.”

Pretty much every metal fan on the planet agrees that Slipknot has probably picked up Sepultura’s drummer Eloy Casagrande, as he abruptly left Sepultura in February “to pursue a career in another project,” despite the fact that Sepultura had already announced they were breaking up and launching their farewell tour. Considering how many have figured it out, you’d think that Slipknot would just make the announcement. Then again, Slipknot wear masks on stage as if everyone doesn’t already know who all the band members are, so, in a sense, this unnecessarily cryptic post is keeping with the band’s M.O.
