STRYPER BETRAY THEIR LORD AND SAVIOR, COVER SONGS BY JEWS AND HOMOSEXUALS

Wednesday, March 10th, 2010 at 11:00am by

If the you young ‘uns don’t know Stryper, well, they were like the Underoath or Demon Hunter of their day. Which is to say, they played Christian metal. Their songs had names like “To Hell with the Devil,” and “Calling On You,” and for their 1985 album, they even covered “Battle Hymn of the Republic (Glory, Glory, Hallelujah),” which may still be the single lamest metal cover of a non-metal song ever, which is really saying something.

Now the band is working on a covers album, which will include their take on songs by the homos in Judas Priest, the blasphemous, drug addled guys in Black Sabbath, and the Jews in Kiss.

I don’t really have much else to say about this… it just made me laugh. Fingers crossed that they add a song by Slayer or Mayhem to the mix…

I’m pretty sure Jews and Homosexuals was the original name for Kiss

      Lol! Priceless…

      I lol’d!

I dismiss them now but I’ll admit that I owned To Hell With The Devil when I was a kid and it had some good tunes on it. A few are even on my hair metal playlist in my ipod.

Agreed. It was a great album for the day and I still listen to it on occasion.

Ah, the striped bumblebee look. So timeless.

Funny, the stupid, cliched, intolerance reputation that all christians get. Good job, Jerry Falwell.
Music was much different back in the early 80′s. Some of Strypers stuff was actually heavy for that time period. And for some of us whose parents were bible-thumping, insane zealots who refused to let anything not christian into their homes, they were one of a few decent alternatives. Plus some of their songs were actually pretty good. As for the fact thet the songs were overtly chriatian, is it really more ridiculous to sing about a God than it is to sing about a devil? It’s all fairy tales, people….

I saw this with our neighbors, who were home schooling fanatical religious zealots. Their son was my age and I felt bad for him, so I told him about Stryper and he liked it. Of course, then Vengeance Rising, Sacrament, Believer, and Deliverance came into the fold and he got scared. But, hey, it was all God metal (which, personally, I could give a rats ass about – I just listen to what sounds good, regardless of the subject).

    • DemonicLemming

Well, it’s not just Jerry Falwell – it’s the Westboro Baptist Church, too, and you can pull up CNN’s home page and find a wonderful article about Catholics not allowing the children of a lesbian couple into their school because they don’t approve of homosexual lifestyles. Sorta funny that they’re taking their zealot rage out on the kids, who have absolutely no bearing whatsoever on the sexual preferences of their parents. Granted, they’re not average Christians (WBC or the Catholics), but they’re extremely vocal, hence the stereotypes.

That said, I really don’t care too much about the lyrical content of a lot of music, unless it’s unignorably political, religious, or pushing the lyricist’s beliefs on the listener. I’m not Christian but I still listen to Demon Hunter.

I guess when I die I’ll find out if its a fairy tale or not…I still like to think there is something after this life. I aint preachin, but Jesus as God still makes sense to me, and it always will. However, I grew up as a bull$h*t charasmatic, who was gonna be a TV F’in evangilist, basically, speakin in tongues and crap. Now when I see that stuff, I run away, not from God but the BS emotionalism !! So, metal has kept me sane! I rock out to more modern day “christian” metal, it sounds better to me than the cheese from the 80s. Tho, most what I listen to would be considered “devil’s/secular’ music, in the religious circles. I can’t get enough of the death metal…….must be all that pent up angst from the 80′s devil’s music oppression.

  • Trux

Can somebody explain to me in what way one band is betraying their god by covering songs by bands whose members are jews and homosexuals ??

I cant believe the stupidity in that sole argument…… oh , its Axl who posted it…. yeah, now it makes sense.

and by the way, Stryper indeed wrote a whole bunch of good tunes back in the day and were head and shoulders above of 80% of the hair metal bands of that time…

  • bekilicious

they have my respect because they believe in something and can’t help but express it with music, and they’re damn good at it. that’s what art is supposed to do. they were pioneers in their day but have always gotten slack for their beliefs. and using this cover album, they’re celebrating their metal influences and favorites; all great bands have influences. they would be a hell of a lot bigger than they are now if they hadn’t sung about what they believed in, and they so know that.

my kudos to them for not following the bs stereotypes of christians that metal is evil and my kudos to them for not following the bs stereotypes of non-christians that singing about god degrades their talent. they are who they are and i love them for it, they’re great musicians. who am i to judge, i don’t give a shit about the popularity contests, i’m looking for good metal, i can’t be a hater for that.

    i’m hoping for a maiden cover…

      • Wolverine999

        right on, brah.

    • IWRESTLEDYOURMOMONCE

I believe they said they are doing The Trooper…

  • Cryzthormagnusian

That’s nothing, Skrewdriver covered songs by Jews, Blacks and Homosexuals as well.

  • SouthFL Infidel

I don’t want to start/join a religious debate (which of course is exactly what it will be), BUT…I don’t understand the correlation between Christians and Anti-Semites. Yes, I know there are plenty of the Mel Gibson types, but as for my personal experience, myself and every other Christian I know has no problem at all with the Jews. Maybe it’s a regional thing, but growing up Christian here in the South, not only do most people have no beef with the Jews, we actually go out of our way to support Jews and to support Israel (in thought if nothing else). We grow up being raised to believe that the Jewish people are God’s chosen people and you don’t fuck with them EVER. God’s covenant with Abraham pretty much lays it out there with the whole “I will bless those that bless you and curse those that curse you” thing (that’s paraphrasing, obviously).

And for what it’s worth, people always seem to equate Christians with the conservative Right-wing. If that’s the case, then it disproves the stereotype of the Christian Anti-Semite, since it’s usually the Right who are in support of Israel and the Left who support Palestine and most other Islamic nations in their beef with Israel.

    Anyway, just my two cents.

    • Trux

besides Jesus Christ is himself a jew…. so I could never understand the correlation between Christians/Catholics an jews. either…

Like you said, maybe it is just a regional issue… I can say for a fact that in my country ( Mexico ) that Catholic anti semite thing is non-existent.

    • Aaron

Seriously don’t get hung up on it you might not have noticed but Axl is actually laughably prejudiced against any sort of Christianity, it comes up in his posts around here constantly. He’s also really, really proud of being a Jew so it’s not an anti-religious slant either he just has some kind of problem with Christians.

It’s not really a problem he’s still a good writer for this site he just wears his really fucking clear bias on his sleeve for some reason. He either seems to think it’s cool and edgy or he just doesn’t care either way so you shouldn’t either.

      • SouthFL Infidel

Nah, I don’t really care. It’s just something I’ve noticed here and lots of other places and I just never quite got it.

  • Goatboy

Stryper were (and are) an awesome band. The musicianship of all four memebers of Stryper far exceeded the likes of Motley Crue, Warrant or just about any other hair metal band you might care to mention. I defy anyone to listen to a song like “The way” ,”To hell with the Devil” or “The rock that makes me roll” (to name a few) and tell me it isn’t metal. If you are put off by the lyrics then that is your loss. Also, there are few reunited bands that have released comeback albums that match the song writing quality of Stryper’s last two.

Having watched some recently posted clips of them touring around it’s good to see that they haven’t lost their guitar chops and that Michael still hits that high scream at the end of “The Way”.

I’ve got my ticket to see them when they come Down Under this April and I’m stoked. It’s a shame that most Blabbersucks posters are too narrow-minded and bigoted to listen to these guys.

The Cover of The Battle Hymn of the Republic in American History X was pretty damn good

  • villanj1

This article makes you look as ignorant as those you’re protesting, Axl. Way to blow it.

  • gregor southard

“Love your neighbor as yourself”– Jesus. You all need to take a deep breath. “The Covering” is a great cd. They don’t condemn.. and neither should you
