This Track by Dave Lombardo’s New Band, Dead Cross, is Brutal as Fuck

I liked but never loved Philm, the band Dave Lombardo formed after being unceremoniously booted from Slayer. I always wanted Lombardo to be doing something a little more fucked-up and daring. And since Philm disbanded, it seemed that Dave has been content to play drums for Suicidal Tendencies.

But this weekend, I heard “We’ll Sleep When They’re Dead,” a track by Dave’s new band Dead Cross, and fucking… wow! Featuring Justin Pearson and Gabe Serbian of The Locust, the band plays fuzzy, mean hardcore with extremely evil overtones. Listen to it below and you’ll hear what I mean.

Given how aggro Slayer went with Repentless, it makes me so happy to hear that Lombardo is doing something this intense. I remember when Lombardo initially came back to Slayer, he was quoted in interviews talking about how evil Kerry and Jeff’s riffs sounded. So maybe Dave brought a lot of the sinister influence to Slayer all along, because this new song packs all the evil that Slayer’s new material is missing.

The band apparently recorded this track, and is working on an album’s worth of material, with Ross Robinson (who seems to be making a strong push back into relevancy lately). We’ll let you know when further album details have been revealed. For now, though, blast “We’ll Sleep When They’re Dead.”
