ARE DREDG RELEASING A CATCH WITHOUT ARMS DOCUMENTARY?

Thursday, March 22nd, 2012 at 2:30pm by

A couple of weeks back Dredg announced a hometown show in which they’d play their 2005 opus Catch Without Arms in full, and we wondered “Why that album? Why now?” Well, we may’ve just gotten our answer. The PRP picked up on a 5-minute clip from a documentary about the making of Catch Without Arms, which has never been released:

CINEMETAL ROUND-UP: NEW VIDEOS FROM MINISTRY, DEMON HUNTER, PARADISE LOST, WRETCHED, AND RISE TO REMAIN

Wednesday, March 21st, 2012 at 1:00pm by

I’m gonna put about as much effort into the introduction as Danny Worsnop puts into being sober when he performs.

We begin today with Ministry’s video for “99 Percenters.” This massively budgeted clip is notable not only for its incredible state of the art production techniques, but also for the manner in which it subtlety conveys its message. Viewers are really gonna have concentrate and think about what Al Jourgensen and company are saying with this clip, and it’s sure to inspire a lot of lively debate regarding the ambiguity of its theme.

VANISHER TAKE A TRIP TO THE GARDEN OF EDEN IN NEW “MARTYR TO THE FLAMES” VIDEO

Tuesday, March 20th, 2012 at 1:30pm by

There are lots of reasons to like North Carolina’s Vanisher:

  1. Siqq riffs (dudes from Bloodjinn are in this band)
  2. Heavy, modern metal with only clean vocals that aren’t cheesy (how come no one else does this?)
  3. Excellent songwriting
  4. Consistent and awesome visuals (always)
  5. They are the only dudes besides me and Axl who actively worship Guns N’ Roses single-take “Garden of Eden” music video

Re #5: Check out their new video for “Martyr to the Flames.” Points #1-4 are obvious — esp. dig the film-in-half-time / speed-it-up-to-full-time trick, which never gets old — but point #5 was confirmed in an email with Justin Reich, who’s put down his bass in favor of taking on true “frontman” duties. Justin made me feel special because I am “the ONLY person who got the reference;” we then proceeded to fellate each other simultaneously over the Internet and live happily ever after.

After the jump, “Garden of Eden,” for reference:

DECAPITATED’S VIDEO FOR “PEST” REMINDS ME I NEED TO LISTEN TO CARNIVAL IS FOREVER AGAIN

Tuesday, March 20th, 2012 at 10:00am by

You know how I know Decapitated’s new video for “Pest” is good? ‘Cause the second it was over, I was like, “Hm, I haven’t listened to Carnival is Forever since naming it the sixth best metal album of 2011.” And then I started listening to it, and I was like, “Holy shit, I only named this sixth?!?” And then my neighbor knocked on the door and were all “Hey, turn that music down and stop shouting, it’s six a.m., asshole.” And then I just made the music louder, because I’m mature like that.

I’m saying that as an advertisement for Carnival is Forever, this surrealist nightmare of a clip is a win.

I honestly feel like I don’t hear people raving about Carnival is Forever enough. IT’S SO GOOD YOU GUYS. If for some reason you’ve never given it a chance, please do. Here’s a link to listen to it on Spotify.

DARK SHADOWS INTERNATIONAL TRAILER: JOHNNY DEPP CALLS ALICE COOPER “THE UGLIEST WOMAN I’VE EVER SEEN”

Monday, March 19th, 2012 at 4:30pm by

When Johnny Depp joined Alice Cooper on stage last year to jam on some oldies-but-goodies from the original shock rocker, we filed the video footage under our “What the Fuck?” category, ’cause, y’know, what the fuck? But we should have known that Depp had some sort of affinity for Cooper, as demonstrated in the international trailer for his infinityth collaboration with Tim Burton, Dark Shadows.

A comedic adaptation of an old vampire-themed soap opera (fo’ reals), the story has essentially been reduced to a Kevin James movie. Still, if you wanna see a fairly convincing young Cooper look-alike and Depp make the simple and not-especially funny joke I’ve spoiled in the headline, skip ahead to the 1:47 mark. And if you don’t, uh, blow me, I guess.

GOD FORBID’S “WHERE WE COME FROM” VIDEO SHOWS YOU WHERE THE BAND… Y’KNOW

Monday, March 19th, 2012 at 3:00pm by

What I really like about God Forbid’s new video for “Where We Come From” — besides the kick-ass song, of course — is that it shows all the various members of the band hard at work at their respective day jobs (including guitarist/MetalSucks columnist Doc Coyle tending bar at Duff’s, one of the best metal joints on the planet). I know we always hammer this shit home, but there is not a lot of money to be made in metal, and seeing that even the guys in God Forbid — a band of no small stature in the metalverse — have to struggle to meet ends meet is valuable lesson to any kid who thinks he’s gonna go off and become James Hetfield. ‘Cause he probably ain’t, and if he’s not in it for the art, he’s gonna start feeling pretty icky about three seconds into any career he manages to make for himself.

Watch the video below. It also features some fun cameos by various behind-the-scenes metal luminaries, like Jose Mangin from Sirius XM, and Skateboard Market’s Munsey Ricci.

“Where We Come From” appears on God Forbid’s latest offering, Equilibrium, which comes out March 26 via Victory.

MOSE GIGANTICUS’ “WHITE HORSE” VIDEO: MATT GARFIELD IS SO WET RIGHT NOW

Friday, March 16th, 2012 at 2:00pm by

Mose Giganticus have released a video for the song “White Horse,” and while I can’t really tell you what the hell the video is supposed to be about, I can tell you that it has lots of pretty colors and arresting imagery and beautiful, and that it’s never really boring. So it’s kinda like a Jodorowsky movie, or a trip to Paul Stanley’s house.

“White Horse” appears on Mose Giganticus’ Gift Horse, which is out now on Relapse.

NORWAY’S SHINING PREMIERE A NEW SONG AT SXSW (WITH VIDEO FOOTAGE!)

Friday, March 16th, 2012 at 1:00pm by

Norway’s Shining were the unequivocal highlight of Thursday’s SXSW action. So it didn’t end up being their first-ever U.S. show as I’d previously thought — Mr. Adrien Begrand corrected me via Twitter (apparently they played in 2008) — but the excitement in the room was bubbling up out of every corner nonetheless, as most if not all the Americans in the room had never seen them before. They took a long while to soundcheck and made a couple of U.S. Rookie mistakes (trying to get the audience to clap along over our heads — lol!), but the mix was crisp, clear and LOUD from the very first note and the performance was completely perfect. So tight, so much energy, saxamaphone and HOLY FUCK SO GOOD!!! Easily the best band I’ve seen down here so far, and we’ve seen some awesome bands: all the bands at South by South Death, Primitive Weapons, Pilgrim, etc (more on that next week). They’re gonna be tough to beat.

Amidst all the blackjazzy goodness Shining squeezed in a new song, and hey, guess who filmed it? Based on a brief and lazy YouTube search it seems as if this is the first time they’ve played it live ever, so here ya go, a [maybe] MetalSucks world exclusive:

LARS ULRICH PREPARES HIS EMMY ACCEPTANCE SPEECH: TRAILER FOR HEMINGWAY & GELLHORN RELEASED

Friday, March 16th, 2012 at 12:30pm by

It was just about a year ago that we learned that Metallica’s Lars Ulrich had joined the cast of the HBO biopic Hemingway & Gellhorn, playing Dutch documentarian Joris Ivens opposite co-stars Clive Owen (in the role of Ernest Hemingway) and Nicole Kidman (Martha Gellhorn). Since then, we’ve been waiting with baited breath for the arrival of the film — for, surely, Ulrich will forever change the face of acting the same way he has forever changed the face of metal drumming.

Well, terrific news! The trailer for the film has been released! And although Ulrich only appears briefly, at the :38 mark, his line delivery — “People from all over the world are heading into Spain!” — proves that he is already a master thespian.

Check out the trailer below. Hemingway & Gellhorn is set to air sometime in May.

THIS IS HELL UNLEASH THEIR “DEMONS,” KICK THE ROAD’S ASS

Friday, March 16th, 2012 at 12:00pm by

This is Hell’s most recent release, Black Mass, is all kinds of fun — and I’m saying that as someone who seems to listens to less and less hardcore with each passing year. On top of that, when I saw the band live for the first time this past November, at The Metal Suckfest, they absolutely kicked my ass. Point being, you should pay attention to this band, dummies.

This should make it easier for you: the band has a released a new, lo-fi as fuck video for their song “Demons”… just in time for the kick off of their U.S. tour, which begins TONIGHT. So I’m not gonna pretend that this is the best music video ever made or anything, but if you’re not familiar with This is Hell’s music, it’s a great opportunity to get wise.

And those tour dates are after the jump!

BRUCE DICKINSON: STILL IN BETTER SHAPE THAN ME

Wednesday, March 14th, 2012 at 1:00pm by

There’s a new Iron Maiden live album and DVD, called En Vivo!, coming out later this month. ‘Cause if there’s one thing the world needed, it was another Iron Maiden live album and concert film. There just has not been enough documentation of this band live over the years. It’s a real tragedy.

I’m going for the easy laugh, but the truth is, I don’t really care that Maiden have released a billion of these things — Maiden are great live and no one is forcing anyone to buy these things so whatever. And the just-released En Vivo! clip of the band performing the Brave New World ditty “Blood Brothers” demonstrates how awesome this band is in concert. Y’know, as long as they’re not doing something stupid, like  A Matter of Life and Death in its entirety.

En Vivo! comes out March 26. You can get dates for Iron Maiden’s upcoming North American tour here.

CINEMETAL ROUND-UP: NEW VIDEOS FROM CANNIBAL CORPSE, MELVINS, CHARRED WALLS OF THE DAMNED, AND TERRORIZER

Tuesday, March 13th, 2012 at 2:30pm by

Music videos: they still exist! I swear it’s true. Sometimes, they’re even good! Let’s watch some now together, shall we?

First up, we have the new, David Brodsky-directed video for Cannibal Corpse’s “Encased in Concrete,” which just debuted on Bloody Disgusting. It’s a really good video, which isn’t shocking in the least — my love of Brodsky’s work is well known, and Cannibal Corpse, of all bands, are aware of the importance of visual representations of their music. The clip isn’t embeddable, but you can see it by clicking on the screen cap below.

THERE MIGHT BE A BILL & TED 3

Monday, March 12th, 2012 at 2:30pm by

More and more every year, the people running Hollywood don’t actually know anything about movies, or, for that matter, care. And so when faced with the most important question of all — “How do we make enough money that models will fuck us and we’ll never run out of blow?” — they increasingly turn to brands with name recognition. So never mind that Harrison Ford and Bruce Willis are both pushing a hundred — audiences have heard of Indiana Jones and Die Hard, so it will be easier to lure them in to see another flick in those franchises! Hoo-ray!

The latest franchise older than some MetalSucks readers to get the sequel treatment may be Bill & Ted. Last week, ‘Ted’ Theodore Logan himself, Keanu Reeves, revealed to The Independent that “a good script” for the flick has been completed; now Alex Winter, a.k.a. Bill S. Preston, Esq., confirms as much to MTV, saying that “ there probably will be another” entry in the series, this one exploring “what’s happened to rock & roll in the last twenty years.” This echoes comments Reeves made to the former music video channel last year, when he revealed that the movie would be about how “Bill and Ted were supposed to have written the song that saved the world, and it hasn’t happened. So they’ve now become kind of possessed by trying to do that.”

Watch the interview with Winter after the jump:

THE OCEAN IN NEW TOUR BLOG VIDEO: “THE RUSSIAN PEOPLE ARE COMPLETELY CRAZY!”

Monday, March 12th, 2012 at 10:00am by

Oh, how I love The Ocean! Like a sex-starved inmate who’s gone without for so long he forgets what it even feels like, sometimes I go long periods with no Ocean in my life only to be reminded of what I’ve been missing by the very scent. Just yesterday the fine lads and lasses at metal radio mainstay WSOU jocked an Ocean song of newer ilk while I was driving around in the ’88 Vincemobile; at first I was all “this is pretty sweet” as I bobbed along, and only halfway through did I have the eureka moment in which I realized what I was listening to. Listening to The Ocean is always great, but doing so on the radio of all places just feels extra badass in these metal-unfriendly radio times.

So: The Ocean are currently on an extended tour of the Russian Federation states (Russia, Belarus, Ukraine), and they’ve released a video tour blog chronicling the madness. This edition covers the first leg of the tour, from St Petersburg to Yekaterinburg, and the band promises that they’ll document their trip to Siberia next (wow!). Watch:

The end of the video gives us a little nugget of info regarding The Ocean’s forthcoming live DVD: it’ll be called Collective Oblivion, will contain THREE DVDs, and will be released “this fall.” Get excitebike!

After the jump, a full video of “She Was the Universe” live in Moscow:

YOU PEOPLE ARE REALLY EXCITED THAT SOME DUDE WORE A BLACK DAHLIA MURDER SHIRT ON EASTBOUND & DOWN

Thursday, March 8th, 2012 at 2:30pm by

Full confession: I still have not seen any episodes of Eastbound & Down, although people I trust tell me it’s hilarious. What can I say? There are only so many hours in the day and only so much television I can watch. I’ll get it to at some point.

ANYWAY, apparently some random extra in one shot of the most recent episode was wearing a Black Dahlia Murder shirt, and based on the number of e-mails we’ve gotten about it this week, you’d think that the President declared March “Black Dahlia Murder Month” or something. Really all that happened was that either the extra was either allowed to wear his clothes in the scene (not uncommon, especially when extras show up and work more or less for free just for the sake of being in something), or, at best, someone in the costume department happens to either be a BDM fan, or just thought the shirt looked appropriate, and then the editor, for whatever reason, chose to include this reaction shot, instead of any number of other reaction shots. I mean, the excitement-to-actual-news ratio here is totally inappropriate. And I say that as a huge fan of The Black Dahlia Murder. (Remember all those nice things I wrote about drummer Shannon Lucas just two days ago?)

But here’s a screen cap, courtesy of reader Mykee Shaffer, so that if this really gets you SO hot n’ bothered, you can just sit here and fap to the image:

Score one for metal kind-of-but-not-really invading mainstream pop culture!

METALLICA HIRE DIRECTOR OF PREDATORS TO HELM 3D MOVIE

Thursday, March 8th, 2012 at 12:30pm by

My assertion that the Metallica 3D movie is going to suck is based on the principle that past behavior is always indicative of future behavior, and that a) Metallica have specialized in churning out drek for the past two decades and b) the movie is being produced by Charlotte Huggins, who, wouldn’t ya know it, also specializes in crap (her credits include the recent Journey 2: The Mysterious Island, which has a whopping 42% “fresh,” or positive, rating on Rotten Tomatoes). But now, just to seal the deal and make sure that this flick is a total waste of time and money, the band has hired hack director Nimród Antal.

SXSW ’12 METALSUCKS EXCLUSIVE – A QUICK CHAT WITH HELLION DIRECTOR KAT CANDLER

Wednesday, March 7th, 2012 at 4:30pm by

I’ve seen Hellion. I love it.

If you enjoyed the portrayal of messed up kids (or adults who refuse to grow up) in films such as River’s Edge, Bully, Alpha Dog, or Boys Don’t Cry, then you will appreciate this six-minute marvel of metallic and familial mayhem.

Hellion was directed by University of Texas film lecturer Kat Candler. She writes and directs films. Real films. Feature-length, majorly distributed films. And short films that get accepted to Sundance. She teaches other aspiring filmmakers how to make films. She organizes groups to help women in cinema. In other words, Kat Candler is a living, breathing guru of the silver screen. Her skills are readily apparent in Hellion.

I don’t want to give away much about the short film, so I encourage you to catch it at this year’s SXSW Film Festival as part of the Texas Short Competition.

I contacted Kat yesterday and asked her via e-mail about Hellion, heavy metal, and why’s she so darn nice?

PUT YOUR VEST ON BEFORE WATCHING THE NEW CHRISTIAN MISTRESS VIDEO

Wednesday, March 7th, 2012 at 2:00pm by

Olympia, WA-based Vest Metal band Christian Mistress have premiered their new video for “Pentagram and Crucifix” over at Pitchfork. I’ve watched it twice through now and I really can’t figure out the plot (something about the band going into a haunted underground cavern where vests are manufactured maybe?) but seeing all that snow after The Great Snowless Winter of 2012 is really inspiring me to spend more time in the Pacific Northwest!

Random observation: I love Christine Davis’ voice, it’s perfect for this band. Must be summoned from the power of The Vest.

MEEK IS MURDER: NEW VIDEO + TOUR DATES WITH TIGER FLOWERS!

Wednesday, March 7th, 2012 at 1:30pm by

I’ve got good news, and I’ve got great news.

The good news is, Meek is Murder have released a new music video, for the Alogrithms tracks “Foo.” According to a press release, “The video was created by drummer Frank Godla in the band’s practice space with a budget of $12 for Mexican food,” but illustrating once again that talent and ingenuity are worth more than a colossal budget, the video feels neither cheap nor boring. Chalk it up to interesting visual choices and, of course, a great song. Check it out:

The great news is that the band has announced dates for that trek with Tiger Flowers I told you about last week, which has been dubbed the “Tiger Murder at Waffle House Tour.” These bands both kick ass so hard in a live setting that you’ll have a boot mark on your butt for a month afterward. Plus, Meek is Murder will be selling the very limited edition 88 MPH cassette, featuring new songs recorded in the band’s rehearsal space, exclusively on this tour. So be sure you don’t miss ‘em. The festivities kick off this Friday. Dates are after the jump!

“DO NOT LOOK” AT THIS MESHUGGAH LYRIC VIDEO. NO WAIT THAT’S DUMB PLEASE DO LOOK.

Tuesday, March 6th, 2012 at 4:00pm by

Vince and I were dorking out about Meshuggah’s Koloss last week — it’s been a consistent participant in both of our respective playlists as of late — when Mr. Neilstein noted how much he loved the album’s slow groove. Truth is, there aren’t many faster songs on the album — “The Demon’s Name is Surveillance” is pretty much it, and “Do Not Look Down” is more or less indicative of the pace of most of the album.

But that’s not a bad thing at all. Koloss may end up being the 2012 album to get stoned to.

If you still haven’t heard “Do Not Look Down” or are just curious about what Jens Kidman is screaming and can’t understand him without closed captioning, check out the new “Do Not Look Down” lyric video below. Everyone else, uhh… just get really, really excited about March 26, when Nuclear Blast will release Koloss. I’ll try to have a proper review completed before then.

Meshuggah are touring North America this April with Baroness and Decapitated. Get dates here.
